Connor, the founder of Amelia Island Microgreens, has been growing microgreens for over 12 years and has experienced all sorts of issues under the sun. In today's video, he covers the most common problems people encounter when starting to grow microgreens and provides solutions to help overcome these challenges.
Growing microgreens can be incredibly rewarding, packing a nutritional punch and adding a vibrant, fresh touch to any meal. However, like any gardening endeavor, microgreens come with their own set of challenges. Addressing these issues early on is crucial to ensure your microgreens stay healthy and productive.
In this blog post, we'll dive into some of the most common problems you might encounter and how to solve them effectively. Plus, Connor shares a secret tip that you're not going to want to miss. Keep reading and be prepared to transform your microgreen growing experience.
In the previous video, Connor discussed the issue of overwatering microgreens. This time, let's talk about the opposite problem: underwatering. Underwatered microgreens can become dry and unhealthy, leading to poor growth and wilted plants. Ensuring your microgreens receive the right amount of water is crucial.
A simple trick to determine when to water is to check the cocoa coir regularly. When it changes from dark brown to light brown, it's time to water. Connor always knows his microgreens are dry when the soil looks the same color as when it was compressed in puck form. Keeping the growing medium consistently moist, especially during the crucial germination phase, is essential. However, be careful not to overdo it to avoid making it waterlogged. Striking the right balance will help your microgreens thrive.
One of the most common issues growers face is dealing with mold. Mold can quickly ruin your microgreens, especially if you're using the wrong type of tray. When microgreens are grown densely and water is poured directly on top, they can easily mold.
Connor's secret tip for preventing mold involves using a two-tier tray system. With this method, you can lift the top tray, pour about half a cup of water into the bottom tray, and then set the top tray back down. This allows the water to be absorbed from the bottom, keeping your microgreens mold-free. This little tweak can make a huge difference in your growing success.
Light is another critical factor in growing healthy microgreens. Without enough sunlight, your plants can become weak and spindly. Inadequate light is a common issue, especially if your home doesn't get much natural light. To help your microgreens thrive, place them on a windowsill that gets plenty of sunlight throughout the day.
Some newer windows have tinting that blocks out the part of sunlight microgreens need to grow. If you notice your microgreens aren't turning green after germination, try taking them outside for 15 to 20 minutes of direct sunlight daily. Alternatively, investing in a good quality grow light can make all the difference.
Poor germination can be incredibly frustrating and is often due to inconsistent moisture levels or improper seed depth. It's essential to ensure your seeds are from a trusted source. Connor emphasizes the importance of using organic, non-GMO, heirloom, and pathogen-tested seeds to avoid issues like E. coli outbreaks.
To boost germination success, ensure seeds are evenly spread out and the growing medium is consistently moist but not soaking wet. Consistent moisture during germination is key to getting those seeds to sprout healthily and uniformly.
