What You’ll Need for the Challenge

You don’t need a green thumb—just a few simple supplies:

🧺 Supplies Checklist:

  • Pathogen-tested seeds (broccoli, radish, or sunflower are great starters)
  • Coco coir (coconut fiber) or other sterile growing medium
  • Two-tier grow tray (top tray with holes, bottom tray without)
  • Spray bottle
  • Filtered or pH-balanced water
  • Tin foil or a dark space for germination
  • (Optional) pH test strip (ideal pH is 6.5–7)

💡 Pro Tip: Use a microgreen growing kit for everything pre-measured and ready to go!

The 7 Day Microgreen Challenge: Day-by-Day Breakdown

🌱 Day 1: Prep & Plant

  • Fill your tray with moistened coco coir and gently press it down (not too tight).
  • Sprinkle your seeds evenly across the surface. Avoid clumps—they reduce airflow and can cause mold.
  • Mist seeds generously with your spray bottle.
  • Cover with tin foil or place in a dark space for the next 3 days.

🌒 Days 2–3: Germination Station

  • Once per day, lift the foil, lightly mist the seeds and the underside of the foil.
  • Keep them in the dark—this helps seeds focus energy on sprouting strong roots.
🚫 Don’t overwater! Coco coir should be damp (dark brown), not soggy or bone dry.

🌤️ Day 4: Let There Be Light

  • Uncover your tray and move it to a well-lit spot—ambient light is perfect.
  • No good light? A basic grow light from Amazon or Marketplace works great.
  • Switch to bottom watering: lift the top tray, pour a cup of water into the bottom tray, and set it back down. After 15 minutes, check that there’s no standing water.

🌿 Days 5–6: Grow Time!

  • Watch your greens stretch toward the light.
  • Continue bottom watering once a day and check moisture levels.
  • Avoid soggy roots—microgreens prefer “moist,” not “wet.”
🧪 Optional: Test your water pH for optimum growth. Adjust with baking soda (if too acidic) or lemon juice (if too alkaline).

🥗 Day 7: Harvest & Enjoy

  • Congrats! Your microgreens are ready to eat.
  • Use scissors to snip off only what you plan to eat today.
  • Leave the rest to keep growing—you have about 14 days to harvest before they start to lose flavor.
  • Need to store them? Harvest and keep them in the fridge for up to another 14 days.

What Can You Do With Microgreens?

Microgreens are insanely versatile. Try adding them to:

  • Salads
  • Smoothies
  • Sandwiches and wraps
  • Soups and stir-fries
  • Omelets, pasta, and pizza toppings
  • Or just snack on them plain!

🧠 Fun Fact: Microgreens can contain up to 40x more nutrients than their full-grown versions—like broccoli, kale, and radish.
